Coldwater girls, Wapak boys win titles

ROSSFORD — Saturday afternoon was not quite as fruitful for area teams as Friday evening was in OHSAA district and sectional play. Where Friday’s action saw multiple teams and individuals advance such was not the case Saturday.

On Saturday only the area favorites were able to move on to the next level and in each did so in relative dominant fashion.

The Coldwater girls joined their male compatriots in relative ease in the action at Interstate Lanes.

Defiance got off to a quick start with a 961 game, outdistancing the favored Cavs who opened at 949. It was in game two, however, that the balance and poise of Coldwater took over. The Cavaliers rolled 903 and 920 in games two and three and nobody else in the field was able to string together games of 900.

Defiance faded quickly in game two and was not a factor.

Napoleon did make a run as did Bryan and Rossford, with Rossford’s strong baker performance nearly enough to propel it into a spot in the state. In the end Rossford fell 45 pins short.

Coldwater’s Shannon Osterfeld continued her great season, especially her great tournament season repeating as a tournament individual champion. She rolled games of 211, 213 and 187 to top the field as she did in sectional play.

Teammate Paige Hartings was not that far behind with a 590 series on games of 209, 191 and 190. The Cavaliers’ Jessica Butler was next up for her teammates with a 561 set on games of 172,195 and 194.

Freshman Brittney Freytag rallied for St Marys who finished back in the pack with games of 184 and 201 but it was not the day that St Marys had hoped as they finished in the eighth slot.

Lydia Shenk became the first bowler to represent Temple Christian in district play in any sport but on this day she finished back some in the pack with games of 146, 158 and 161.

Wapak triumphs

The question for a great deal of this season has been – “Can Wapak repeat?” If Saturday afternoon is any indication the answer is YES!

Perrysburg gave some early indication that they would challenge the Redskins for the sectional title as they opened with an 1,112 game to outdistance the 1,107 of Wapak. The key however is the ability to sustain that level of play.

On Saturday, Perrysburg could not, dropping in game two to 983 and Wapak stayed in the same realm with a 1,084.

Wapak opened things up even more in game three with an 1,117 game and outdistanced Anthony Wayne which had opened with games of 1,060 and 1,040 in an attempt to keep pace with the Redskins but fell to 960 in game three.

The bakers belonged to the Redskins early as they continued to top the 200 standard until Coach Jim Kaeck emptied his bench.

Wapak finished with 4,515, dominating runner-up Anthony Wayne which tallied 4,230. Sandusky finished at 4,167 and Perrysburg held on for the final district berth at 4,152.

Shawnee finished seventh at 3,934 and with a break here and there it could have finished higher. The Indians finished with 200 games in three of their final four baker games. Celina finished 1oth 3,753 after opening with a 1,015 and Lima Senior finished with 3,309.

Wapak’s Nate Kaeck took individual honors with games of 263, 263 and 200 for a 726 series. Teammate Tyler Miller was next with games of 236, 191 and 268 for 695. Brendan Kennard helped the Wapak cause as well with 243, 183 and 232 for 658.

Alex Weiser was a big bright spot for Lima Shawnee with a 633 series. He rolled games of 187, 238 and 203. He was not alone, getting some help from teammates William Kleffner 251-587 and Drew Ambroza 227-581.

Keonte Bankston was the top man for Lima Senior with a 214-212-569 set and Andrew Stambaugh paced Celina with a 640.

D1 District action will be this coming Saturday at Eastern Lanes in Northwood.
