Wapak coach honored, team member reaches perfection

The WOHSBC heads into the stretch but this past week two valued members of Team Wapak took a detour to meet an individual honor and a personal goal.

Coach Jim Kaeck was very pleased to be honored as the OHSAA Boys Coach of the Year. We had limited time to speak and he was very quick to defer any talk of his honor to the team. “I really owe it all to the team as without them I would have not been honored!”

Jim was also about unfinished business, this season and the upcoming opportunity that they will have to repeat a title run.

Brandon Kennard, who currently holds the number one average spot in the conference with an average of 220.1 rolled a perfect game in an out of conference match with Defiance. Everything logical says that this will not be his last — there may even be one in conference this season. He has dominated conference scoring at a historical level this season. Alex Meyer of Coldwater is number two this season and only his teammates Cory Whitacre and Blake Spangler as well as Nick Bohman of Russia are the only ones to top the 200 norm this season.

Kennard did not disappoint this past week with games of 228 and 223 to take series honors at Celina. Bohman took the game nod with a 237 while Caleb Fetzer of Van Wert rolled a 234.

Wapak easily handled New Bremen to go to 12-0. St. Henry defeated Parkway 2,630-1,705 to climb to 10-2 but are out of weeks this season. Coldwater stayed in range at 9-2 with a big 2,766-2,327 win over Russia.

Lima Central Catholic reversed a recent up and down streak with a 2,717-2,672 win over Ottawa-Glandorf. The match was very tight at the end of the tenpin games but LCC took control with two big games (214-259) out of the baker gate and was never really at risk of losing after that point.

James Riepenhoff continued his solid season with a 218 game in the Thunderbird victory. Ian Friesner and Mitch Hoffman also reached the 200 mark.

Temple Christian fell to Ansonia 2,118-1,715.

On the girls side of things …

Wapak dismantled Ansonia 2,528-1,653 to remain undefeated on the season. It was clearly a team performance for the Redskins this past Saturday.

They currently stand 9-0 with the Cavaliers just behind at 9-1, following a 2,565-1,894 win over improving Temple Christian. On this day it was just of the balance of a very good Coldwater team.

Emily Fortenor stroked a 210 and Paige Hartings tallied a 209 as they led a well-balanced squad to the win and finished 1-2 in scoring honors for the girls side of the conference.

Bridgette Holsapple of Versailles also scored a 209 and Amanda Stachler of Parkway (205) and Megan Ward of Versailles (202) also went over the 200 standard.

The biggest gainer for the weekend may well have been the Versailles Tigers as they made up two matches that had been missed. The result of this past week was three wins for the Tigers over New Bremen, Temple Christian and Van Wert.

Lima Central Catholic had a bye for the week.

The Wapak boys will take on O-G at 9:45 Saturday morning at McBo Lanes in Versailles as the conference resumes action. LCC will battle New Bremen at that same time. Temple Christian will roll against St Henry at 1 p.m.

The conference schedule gets a little more disjointed with four of the girls varsity matches being rolled at McBo at 1 p.m. and the rest elsewhere. Coldwater at Mississinawa Valley promises to be one of the bigger matches on the slate.

The Redskins and LCC will battle at 2 p.m. with Temple Christian doing battle against Minster at that same time in Celina.
