Danielle Taflinger honored at Findlay

FINDLAY — Lima Central Catholic grad Danielle Taflinger was named this week as the University of Findlay Sharon G. Milligan Female Athlete of the Year Award. The award covers the 2013-14 season.

For her senior season, Taflinger was named first team all-GLIAC, first team all-region and NCAA honorable mention All-American. She led the league in hitting percentage with a mark of .344.

She ended her Findlay career as the career leader in hitting percentage at .347. Taflinger finished eighth on the school’s all-time kill list with 1,118 kills. She was also fourth on the all-time list in blocks with 400.

Taflinger also played in 433 sets while at Findlay. She started and played every game in her four-year career.

Gaddy wins state Silver Gloves tourney in Lima

LIMA — Lima South Side boxer Javionte Gaddy defeated Reno McCoy (Cleveland) in a 2-1 split decision in the finals of the 112-pound senior division of the state Silver Gloves tournament Saturday at the Lima VWF Hall.

Lima’s Jahosh Allen, Nick Harrod and Emilio Rettig all advanced to the regionals by default. There was no one in their weight class.

Gaddy, Allen, Harrod and Rettig all advance to the Silver Gloves regional tournament in two weeks at Cincinnati.

In the finals, Quincy Harris (Cleveland) defeated Lima’s Jordan Sexton in a unanimous decision in the 100-pound junior division.

Also, in the finals, Avonte Burns (Cincinnati) defeated Lima’s Kanye Williams in a unanimous decision in the 75-pound junior division. Javione King (Toledo) defeated Lima’s Jerry Denson in a unanimous decision in the 80-pound junior division.

South Side boxers who lost in Friday’s semifinals were Kenyon Rettig, Cruz Lugo, Taji Breland and Javen Williams.

Lima Express postpones game with Racine

The Racine at Lima Express game was postponed on Sunday becaues of the expected snow which was scheduled to arrive in the area Sunday night. Racine didn’t make the trip in from Wisconsin.

There was no makeup game announced.

For those who purchased tickets for the game, those tickets will be honored at any future Lima Express game remaining this season.

Royals sign veteran Madson to minor league deal

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Royals have signed veteran right-hander Ryan Madson to a minor league contract that includes an invitation to spring training.

The 34-year-old Madson hasn’t pitched in the big leagues since 2011, when he was 4-2 with a 2.37 ERA and 29 saves for the Phillies.

He signed a one-year deal with Cincinnati for the following season, but he was forced to undergo Tommy John surgery in spring training.

Madson attempted a comeback with the Angels last season but made only one appearance for Class-A Inland Empire before hurting his elbow again.

Madson is 47-30 with a 3.59 ERA and 52 saves in 491 big league appearances.

NHL fines Flyers for travel over holiday break

NEW YORK — The NHL has fined the Philadelphia Flyers for violating the collective bargaining agreement by traveling during a holiday break.

The league did not disclose the amount of the fine Sunday.

Players are barred from traveling or practicing from Dec. 24-26 under the collective bargaining agreement. Rogers Sportsnet in Toronto reported Saturday that online flight records showed the Flyers took a flight from Philadelphia to Nashville the night of Dec. 26.
