ALLEN COUNTY — A pedestrian walking along a country road was hit by a vehicle and died at the scene late Wednesday.

Rickey A. Sheetz, 34, of Sidney, was hit while walking around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday in the 5800 block of Stewart Road.

Chief Deputy James Everett, of the Allen County Sheriff’s Office, said the area is rural and there are no sidewalks. The roads are predominantly safe but unlit.

The area is near U.S. 30 and Cairo.

The driver of the vehicle that hit Sheetz, Christian Staggs, 23, of Beaverdam, said he did not see the man in the road until just before impact. Everett said Staggs made the initial 911 phone call to report the incident and remained there until help arrived.

Staggs was not injured, Everett said.

At 9:25 p.m., the sheriff’s office received a phone call that a man was walking in the area of Stewart and State roads, according to a news release. The fatal accident was reported at 9:34 p.m.

As of Thursday, Staggs was not facing charges. The incident is still under investigation. Additional information was unavailable Thursday afternoon.
