WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama has congratulated the Ohio State Buckeyes on winning the first college football playoff.

The White House says Obama telephoned head coach Urban Meyer on Tuesday evening to congratulate him and the team. Obama also made special note of several underclassmen who stepped up during the game despite injury and adversity.

The Buckeyes were greeted by dozens of fans after arriving home Tuesday in Columbus, Ohio, following the 42-20 victory over Oregon.

Obama told the coach that he looks forward to celebrating with the team at the White House.
