VAN WERT — Wassenberg Art Center Executive Director Hope Wallace said the 147th annual American Watercolor Society coming to Van Wert this weekend is a big deal.
“Not only does the center celebrate local and regional art,” Wallace said. “It brings to the area national and now international level exhibitions.”
The watercolor exhibit is one of the premier watercolor exhibits in the world. The traveling exhibit, featuring 40 works, will open Saturday and continue through Feb. 19. An opening reception will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, featuring blues musician Radoslav Lorkovic. There will be a cash bar and free hors d’oeuvres.
Wallace said included in the exhibit will be a painting by Stephen Quiller of Creede, Colorado, who won the Gold Award as the society’s best painting for 2014.
“There are artists from all over the world,” Wallace said. “There is all kinds of art available, from the traditional watercolor art that is colorful and some new ideas, with detail and abstract art.”
Wallace said some of the art seems so realistic, that it “seems you are looking at a photo.”
The center, at 214 S. Washington St., is open 1 to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays.
