LIMA — Negotiators spoke with a man for nearly four hours by phone during a standoff with police Wednesday before the incident ended peacefully.

According to a report from the Lima Police Department, officers received a call at 2:17 p.m. Wednesday concerning a report of a man who had threatened to harm himself at 560 Ertel Ave. A man at the residence reportedly had called his doctor and said he was going to harm himself. The doctor quickly called law enforcement.

Sgt. Andrew Green said members of the Hostage Negotiation Team managed to talk the man out of the home shortly after 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. He said that negotiators spoke with the man several times by phone during the ordeal.

“We are glad it ended the way it did,” Green said. “It was a successful resolution.”

Armed officers from the Enhanced Tactical Unit were also at the scene and could be seen crossing Baxter Street toward the residence during the ordeal. The call reported the man possessed a shotgun, but the LPD did not reveal if a shotgun were found at the time when the man surrendered himself.

Green reported that it was unknown what upset the man and caused the situation. He reported that the Lima Fire Department took the individual to St. Rita’s Medical Center for evaluation.
