Bath, Wapak advance to wrestling regional semifinals

BATH TOWNSHIP — Bath advanced to the Division III regional semifinals in wrestling by defeating Delphos St. John’s 54-24 and Delphos Jefferson 47-33 in Sub-Region 24-A matches Wednesday night.

The Wildcats will next take on Wayne Trace on Feb. 4 at a yet to be determined location.

Division II

Sub-Region 16-B

WAPAKONETA — Wapak advanced to the regional semifinals with a 49-22 victory over Bellefontaine. In the opening match, Bellefontaine defeated St. Marys 38-30.

Sub-Region 16-A

INDIAN LAKE — Elida defeated Celina 54-12 before falling to Indian Lake 39-24.

Division III

Sub-Region 24-A

Haviland — Lima Central Catholic defeated 52-27 but lost to top seeded Wayne Trace 40-33.

Sub-Region 24-B

COLUMBUS GROVE — Ottawa-Glandorf was eliminated by Mohawk 45-25 after defeating Crestview 51-29. Columbus Grove fell to Mohawk 59-18.

Sub-Region 23-A

COLDWATER — The host Cavaliers defeated Milton-Union 58-15 but were then eliminated by Versailles 34-20.

A pair of Lima area players have made their college selections.

Casey Clark of Lima Central Catholic will be signing with St Francis University in Fort Wayne, Indiana, to play volleyball.

Spencerville’s Logan Vandemark has accepted a scholarship to play football at Ashland University.

Men’s basketball

ONU 72, Otterbein 56

WESTERVILLE — The Ohio Northern men’s basketball team cruised to a victory over Otterbein University at Rike Center.

The Polar Bears improved their record to 9-9 on the season and 4-7 in Ohio Athletic Conference play, while Otterbein fell to 3-15 overall and 2-9 in the conference.

Devon Allen scored a game-high 14 points to lead the Polar Bears and Aron Thress added 10 points and four rebounds for Northern.

Defiance 73, Bluffton 51

DEFIANCE — Bluffton fell to 8-10 overall with a 4-7 mark in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference while Defiance improved to 13-5 on the season and 8-3 season record.

The Jackets were able to dominate throughout, riding Bernard Edwards 31 points and 18 from Mason Roth to an easy victory. Defiance pushed its lead all the way to 26 with 1:55 left in the game. The only signs of life for the Beavers came from Thayne Recker (Arlington) and Billy Taflinger (Lima/Central Catholic) with 35 of Bluffton’s points split between the two juniors.

The poor shooting was the tale of the take as the Beavers were only able to hit 13.3 percent (2-of-15) from behind the arc and 45.5 percent (5-for-11) from the charity stripe. Despite out-rebounding the home team, 41 to 35, Bluffton was unable to take advantage of easy opportunities which put the Beavers in a tough situation all night long.

Bluffton’s Thayne Recker finished with 19 points as well as adding a game-high 12 rebounds and two blocks for his 12th career double-double. Lima Central Catholic gradute Billy Taflinger added 16 points and six rebounds off the bench.

LIMA — Larry Fuqua (18), Xavier Gross (17) and Isiah Simpson (12) all scored in double digits for the host Barons.

Women’s basketball

ONU 82, Otterbein 54

ADA — The Polar Bears improved to 14-4 overall an, 10-1 in the OAC while the Cardinals fell to 5-13 overall and 2-9 in the conference.

Senior Jordan Kimes netted a game-high 16 points, as 11 different Polar Bears scored in the contest.

Bluffton 79, Defiance 54

DEFIANCE — A 28-10 run by Bluffton during the first 10 minutes of the second half sent the Beavers to a 79-54 victory over rival Defiance. The Beavers improved to 13-5 overall and 8-3 in the HCAC while Defiance slipped to 6-12 aon the season and 5-6 in the conference.

Taylor Whitaker led Bluffton with 21 points while Kaitlyn Pennekamp scored 18 points Macey Sheerer just missed out on a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds.

Wrestling

Mt. Union 29, ONU 7

ADA — Ohio Northern dropped a 29-7 wrestling dual meet decision to No. 7-ranked Mount Union Tuesday night in an Ohio Athletic Conference matchup at the ONU Sports Center.

The Polar Bears fell to 13-4 overall and 1-1 in the OAC, while the Purple Raiders improved to 11-3 and 2-0 in the league.

ONU’s Cody Lovejoy improved to 30-0 on the season with a 14-0 major decision at heavyweight.

The Polar Bears will return to action Friday and Saturday at the Wheaton (Ill.) Invitational.

Bluffton 2nd

in softball poll

GREENWOOD, IN — Bluffton University was picked to finish second behind Anderson University in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference in a preseason poll of league softball coaches. The defending champion Ravens claimed 79 total points and eight first-place votes.

Bluffton received 72 total points. Franklin College finished third with 51 total points and was followed by Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology with 50 points and the final first place vote. Hanover College (43), Transylvania University (42), Manchester University (31), Defiance College (22), and Mount St. Joseph University (15) rounded out the poll.
