Auglaize, Putnam lead area deer harvest figures

COLUMBUS – Ohio’s annual white-tailed deer gun hunting week kicked off Monday with hunters checking 17,193 deer on opening day, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ Division of Wildlife. Ohio’s gun season is open until Dec. 4 and again on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 17-18.

Last year hunters took 21,754 deer on the opening day of the gun season, which traditionally falls on the Monday after Thanksgiving.

Opening day deer harvest totals in Allen and surrounding counties included: Allen, 88 (75); Auglaize, 135 (93); Hardin, 112 (138); Mercer, 118 (85); Putnam, 134 (85); and Van Wert, 63 (59).

The first number shows the harvest numbers for opening day 2022. The three-year average of deer harvested on opening day in 2019-2021 is in parentheses.

The top 10 counties for deer harvest on the opening day of Ohio’s gun season were Coshocton (591), Tuscarawas (584), Muskingum (584), Ashtabula (548), Knox (474), Carroll (464), Guernsey (434), Licking (430), Columbiana (397), and Washington (373).
