ONU presenting The Kingsmen Quartet

ADA — The Ohio Northern University Freed Center for the Performing Arts will present The Kingsmen Quartet at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 7.

The southern gospel band has been performing since 1956, getting its start in western North Carolina. According to a news release, the band has become “one of the most beloved and innovative groups in Christian music.”

Tickets for this event are $25 for adults, $20 for seniors, $15 for ONU faculty and staff, and $10 ONU students and children. The Freed Center box office is open from noon to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. Wapak native wins UNOH award

LIMA — Dove Vaske, an automotive and high-performance motorsports student at the University of Northwestern Ohio, was chosen as the August Snap-On 110% Award winner.

Vaske was nominated by Chris Woods, an instructor in the College of Applied Technologies at UNOH. When asked why he nominated Vaske, Woods said, “She excelled as a student and as a leader in the classroom. She was very involved in the shop, instrumental in motivating other students, worked diligently to complete all of her work, while at the same time leading and encouraging others to achieve more.”

The 110% Award is sponsored by Snap-On Tools at UNOH. Each session, nominations are turned into the deans by the university’s College of Applied Technologies’ instructors. The winner of each session is then chosen by the division deads with determining factors being GPA, outstanding performance, and attendance. Dale Stahl, Snap-On representative for UNOH, presents each winner with a Snap-On jacket and tool set valued at more than $250.

Violinist to perform at UF

FINDLAY — Fresh from his Oct. 16 Carnegie Hall appearance with the American Symphony Orchestra, Tracy Silverman, an internationally renowned violinist and electric violinist, will perform two free concerts as part of The University of Findlay’s 2015-16 Music Bach’s Concert Series. Both events will be held Nov. 6 and are open to the public.

The first concert will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Alumni Memorial Union. This concert will be more informal, and attendees are encouraged to pack a lunch or purchase one at The Cave. Individuals are welcome to come and go as their schedules allow. The second concert will be held at 8 p.m. in the Alumni Memorial Union. This will be a traditional formal solo concert.

ONU holding Model U.N. program

ADA — Some 130 students from 10 high schools from across the state will participate in the Model United Nations simulation program at Ohio Northern University on Saturday. The event, which begins at 9:30 a.m., is sponsored by the ONU Department of History, Politics and Justice and the ONU Department of Modern Languages.

This year’s one-day simulation will focus on three key world issues. The committee topics for deliberation are using women as active agents in peace and security, combating Islamic State terrorist threats, and controlling nuclear proliferation in the Middle East.

The resolutions passed by the committees will be brought to the afternoon session of the General Assembly, which will debate the resolutions and vote to adopt or reject each one. Each three-student team will act as delegates of a specific country. Each of the delegates on a team will represent his or her country on one of the three General Assembly committees.

Lima native graduates from Kent State

KENT — Elise Steinke, of Lima, graduated cum laude from Kent State University with a Bachelor of Science from the College of Arts and Sciences.

Steinke is among nearly 1,700 students who received bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral, associate and educational specialist degrees during Kent State’s 2015 summer commencement ceremony.

UNOH to host Veterans Services Outreach Day

LIMA — The University of Northwestern Ohio will be hosting its inaugural UNOH Veterans Services Outreach Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 10 at the UNOH Event Center. This event is free and open to all active duty, National Guard, Reserve and veterans.

This event is designed to help local veterans make connections with the services that are available to them in the region. Attendees will be able to enroll in VA Health Coverage, make disability claims, check on the status of disability claims, learn about service dogs and the equestrian therapy program, and touch base with the Veterans Food Pantry and Veterans Transportation Service.

There will also be representatives in attendance from http://OhioMeansJobs.com, http://Careers.Ohio.Gov, and Helmets to Hardhats, Disabled Veterans Outreach Specialists and the Department of Job and Family Services.
