BLUFFTON — The estate of Hazel Robinson has donated $2 million to support scholarships for Bluffton University nursing students, with an emphasis on female nursing majors from India.
The scholarships will be awarded to nursing students starting in the fall of 2023, the university announced Tuesday.
Bluffton University’s RN to BSN dual-degree program allows students to become registered nurses by the end of their junior year, after which students pursuing their Bachelor of Science in Nursing may work as registered nurses while finishing their degree.
“The demands for patient care due to the pandemic have resulted in needs in a multitude of health care settings that registered nurses are uniquely suited to fill,” Dr. Sherri Winegardner, director of nursing at Bluffton, said in a press release Tuesday.
The scholarships, named in honor of the late Robinson’s maternal grandmother and parents, will be “integral” to the university’s recruitment and retention strategy, while also providing additional resources to students in need, Winegardner said.
Priority will be given to female nursing students from India at the benefactor’s request, according to the university.
