LIMA — A man charged in the 2009 slaying of another man was found competent to stand trial Thursday.

Judge Jeffrey Reed ruled Markelus Carter was competent to stand trial based on an evaluation by a mental health professional who evaluated Carter. The trial is scheduled for Sept. 8.

Carter, 45, is charged with aggravated murder with a firearm and having a firearm under a court sanction in the Feb. 23, 2009, slaying of Ken Warrington outside a home at 436 E. McKibben St. Warrington was shot four times in the upper torso.

Carter said he is innocent.
