COLUMBUS, Ohio — Former state appeals court judge Dennis Deters has been appointed to a full term on the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio, fellow Republican Gov. Mike DeWine announced Friday.

Deters, who was first appointed to the PUCO by DeWine in 2019, was recommended for a full five-year term by a nominating committee last month.

A Hamilton County attorney, Deters was appointed by then-Gov. John Kasich to the state First District Court of Appeals in 2017, but he lost re-election the following year. He’s the brother of Hamilton County Prosecutor and ex-state Treasurer Joe Deters.

The PUCO, which regulates electric, gas, telephone and water utilities in the state, has come under increasing scrutiny since its DeWine-appointed chair, Sam Randazzo, resigned last November, after the FBI raided his home. Details have since emerged about a questionable $4 million payment Randazzo received from FirstEnergy Corp.

Earlier on Friday, the PUCO nominating committee sent four new names to DeWine to choose from to fill Randazzo’s seat. They include:

Virginia King, an assistant general counsel with Marathon Petroleum Company (Republican).

Daniel Shields, director of the Ohio Consumers’ Counsel’s analytical department (Independent).

Melissa Shilling, chair of the state Environmental Review Appeals Commission (Republican).

Two others whom the committee interviewed for the job - retired Fayette County Common Pleas Judge Nancy Hammond and Jade Davis, director of external affairs for the Cleveland-Cuyahoga Port Authority - didn’t make the panel’s final list of nominees.

Last month, DeWine rejected four different finalists submitted by the committee for Randazzo’s seat.
