Fairfield Twp. asks the state’s help to fund veterans memorial

Fairfield Twp. is turning to the state of Ohio to assist with funding much of its veterans’ memorial project.

Earlier this month, Fairfield Twp. trustees approved $50,000 toward the memorial to be installed at Heroes Park at 6032 Morris Road. They will ask the state for $218,000, which is two-thirds of the estimated $325,000 project cost.

Fairfield Twp. Trustee Susan Berding said the township’s contribution is the maximum the trustees can contribute according to state law, and it has the support of state lawmakers. The Fairfield Community Foundation will contribute just less than $50,000 toward the project.

Breaking ground on the construction of Heroes Park and the veterans memorial is “the most exciting” project for Berding in 2020.

“We approved a vision plan several months ago, and hopefully, we’ll get the playground equipment installed for late spring,” she said.

If Fairfield Twp. can get the full funding request, Berding said it would be “a huge help.” However, since there’s no guarantee on the amount that will be funded — or if they will receive any funding — she said the township and veterans memorial committee would “have our work cut out for us.”

“It will be a little bit of a steeper climb,” she said.

The memorial will include areas for personal reflection and larger group gatherings and will be accessible for visitors, according to the township.

The first phase of the project will prepare the site, including the installation of all electrical conduits, a flagpole and lighting, and a circular planter with granite seating that has preambles to the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution, and the final sentence from the Gettysburg Address.

Phase 2 will include installing flag poles for each branch of service, welcome and dedication monuments and landscaping.

The third phase will see 12 benches installed that trace America’s participation in wars and major conflicts.
