CLEVELAND — University Circle police shot a man late Saturday in the city’s Little Italy neighborhood, according to three police sources.
A shootout between police and two suspects in an armed robbery and shooting happened about 8 p.m. on Coltman Road and East 120th Street in a field behind the University Circle Police Department.
University Circle Police Chief Jim Repicky later confirmed the shooting. He said the man who was shot by his officers is at University Hospitals. His current medical condition is not known.
Police are investigating the possibility that the shooting is related to the armed robbery and shooting of a Case Western Reserve University student on Murray Hill Road. The student is also at University Hospitals and is expected to survive, according to a statement from Case Western Reserve University.
The university’s statement said two people are in custody, but did not say if that included the man shot by University Circle police.
Police said they spotted the two suspected robbers a few minutes later on East 119th Street and Mayfield Road. The officers chased after them, police said.
Two witnesses to the police-involved shooting, Jim and Amanda Wochele, said they saw the suspect run through the parking lot of their apartment complex on East 119th Street, down Coltman and into the field. They saw three or four University Circle police officers follow him in to the field.
Both said they heard police officers yell, “Put the gun down,” followed by commands of “put your hands up” and multiple warnings of “we will shoot,” the Wochele’s said.
A shootout ensued, injuring one of the robbery suspects, according to police. The couple said they heard between 15 and 30 gunshots.
Cleveland Police Chief Calvin Williams is at the scene, along with Cleveland police’s use-of-deadly-force team that investigates all police-involved shootings in the city. University Circle police were also at the scene along with Case Western Reserve police.
Williams and other Cleveland police officials at the scene refused to comment.
