CANTON — When a young man threatened a 64-year-old relative with a knife, the older man grabbed a barbell and hit him in the head.

So the young man stabbed the man’s hands, causing serious injuries, according to Canton Police reports and Stark County Jail records. The police reports said officers determined the older man had acted in self-defense.

Police arrested Daniel D. Hinton, 24, about 5:40 p.m. Tuesday at Mercy Medical Center after the incident took place at a home in the 2000 block of Spring Avenue NE, the jail records show.

Hinton was jailed on charges of felonious assault and domestic violence as his relative was taken to an area hospital to be treated.

The jail records did not say why the men were arguing.

Hinton remained in jail Wednesday, held in lieu of $60,000 bond pending a Canton Municipal Court hearing.
