COLUMBUS — For Ohio beer lovers, this is an age of milk (stout) and honey (ale).
With hundreds of craft breweries to choose from — and more bubbling up all the time — weekend or day-trip travelers will find a local brewery or two, or 20, near most destinations in the Buckeye State from Ashtabula to Zanesville, Archbold to Zoar.
Finding the breweries or taprooms is made easier by a smartphone app produced by the Ohio Craft Breweries Association. The app, available for iOS or Android, provides information about more than 150 breweries, including maps, hours and events.
The handy app also uses a location-based tool to help sniff out nearby breweries, connects to social media links, opens a beer style-guide and offers to keeps track of your favorites.
When the GPS confirms that I’m at one of the member breweries, I can log in and register my visit with just a touch. (If I have no signal, I can take a picture as evidence and submit it later.)
App users who check-in at 10, 25, 50 or more different breweries can earn rewards such as stickers, T-shirts and bar trays.
There’s even an “Enthusiast Member Package” for those who check in at 150 or more.
