Keep debris out of drains
for stormwater, SWCD pleads
LIMA – The Allen Soil and Water Conservation District asks homeowners to divert pet waste, leaves, grass, dirt, trash and other debris from stormwater drains to help improve water quality and prevent pollution.
When yard waste is washed down a storm drain, it is carried by stormwater into the Ottawa River and its tributaries, according to SWCD Outreach Coordinator Casey Heilman. He said once the debris gets into waterways it starts to break down and decay, releasing nutrients which add to the algae already in the river. Eventually, fewer animals can live in these algae-covered areas and move on or die from lack of oxygen.
