Trade union on 2019: ‘never seen it this good’

LIMA — Work has been plentiful for the construction and building trades, with major projects at Husky Lima Refinery, PRO-TEC and hospitals benefiting skilled workers in the region this past year, according to Lima Building & Construction Trades Council President Rick Perdue.

There was so much work in the region, in fact, that Perdue says 2019 has been one of the best years for the building trades since he started in the field 34 years ago.

“I’ve never seen it this good,” said Perdue, who shared his 2019 analysis during the trade council’s Christmas party at the City Club on Friday.

Perdue estimates the Husky and PRO-TEC projects alone garnered 500 million man-hours for contractors, while other projects in the region boosted those statistics even higher.

And with work available all over Ohio and the U.S., Perdue said workers could travel around in search of the best pay and overtime hours.

“Work has been plentiful,” Perdue said. “Right now is a good time to be in the construction industry. For a few years, people have held back with their money. Now they’re putting a lot more of their money into the system.”

While building and construction work has slowed since the fall, Perdue expects to see a turnaround in the first quarter of 2020.

The Lima Building & Construction Trades Council represents 16 trade unions and 2,500 skilled craftsmen in northwest Ohio.
