P&G invests in Lima plant

LIMA — Procter & Gamble on Thursday unveiled the first phase of a multi-million investment targeting the Lima plant’s employee culture.

The two-phase project is a bit different from other investments P&G has made to its production and distribution centers in Lima, which have typically focused on making the plant more efficient or introducing new product lines.

“We’re really investing in our culture,” said John Shaver, Lima’s plant manager.

The Lima plant now has a new front entrance and meeting room overlooking the reservoir, with more upgrades expected to start sometime around the summer of 2020.

Shaver estimated P&G is dedicating about $10 million toward the updates, spanning the new entrance and meeting area as well as other employee areas, like the plant’s medical facility, cafeteria and fitness room.

“When the site first opened, we had a couple hundred employees here,” said Shaver, who came to Lima about one and a half years ago. “We have 700 P&G employees and another 800 contractors that work here onsite right now. (We’re) expanding the facilities to match the workforce that we have.”

P&G has made other major investments in its Lima plant over the years: In 2007, P&G opened a distribution center in Lima, not far from the manufacturing facility. And in 2018, the company started production of perfume products — like those used in shampoos, dish soap and diapers — at the Lima site.

Shaver said P&G is investing millions of dollars elsewhere in the manufacturing center, focused on new product lines.

Procter & Gamble makes liquid fabric enhancers in Lima, as well as about 60% of the company’s Tide Pods and liquid Tide detergent.

Julie Gudde, Procter & Gamble’s North American product supply director for fabric care, said the Lima plant is one of P&G’s most strategic sites in Ohio and globally for fabric care.

“This is one of the investments that we wanted to make in the Lima plant,” she said. “It would help show off the legacy and pride that we have in this plant, this organization.”
