Memorial Day events highlight the weekend

LIMA — Residents will get their chance to honor the men and women who paid for freedom with their lives this weekend, with an assortment of Memorial Day events planned in the region.

Lima’s annual event will be different. A gathering will start at 11 a.m. Monday at VFW Post 1275, at the corner of East Elm and South Main streets in Lima. At 11:30 a.m., they will march north toward the flagpole at Lima’s Town Square. At noon, the flag will raise from half staff to full staff, with the playing of Taps.

People will then return to the VFW, where Allen County Commissioner Beth Seibert will be the featured speaker. A meal, prepared by the VFW, will be held after the ceremony.

Other Memorial Day plans include:

• Bluffton’s Memorial Day Parade begins at 9:30 a.m. Monday at Bluffton Town Hall, 154 N. Main St., followed by a 10 a.m. service at Maple Grove Cemetery. The Bluffton American Legion will hold a chicken barbecue from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Citizens National Bank parking lot, 102 S. Main St., for $9 per person.

• Lafayette will hold a Memorial Day parade at 9 a.m., running from Washington Street and winding through town to pass the Civil War monument. A ceremony will take place at the monument. A pickup chicken barbecue for $9 will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Lafayette-Jackson Fire Department, 215 E. Sugar St., Lafayette.

• The Delphos Veterans Council will have its program at 11 a.m. at Veterans Memorial Park, corner of Fifth and Main streets in downtown Delphos. There won’t be a parade or meal this year due to COVID-19 concerns.

• Memorial Day Garage Sale, Craft Fair & Food is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday at Harrod Event Center, 9520 Harrod Road, Harrod. Garage sales will be outside along with food trucks, with a craft and vendor fair inside.

Other events this weekend include:

• Lima Land Poetry Slam’s open mic starts at 7:30 p.m. today at SUNE Elevated Studios, 1174 W. North St., Lima.

• Tailgates & Jakebrakes Truck Show is slated 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Allen County Fairgrounds, 2750 Harding Highway, Lima, Entrance is $10 for 13 and up and free for 12 and under. Trucks can enter for $15 the day of the event.

• ZA will make its debut at Zinum 12, 134 W. High St., Lima, at 9 p.m. Saturday.

• The Bard & Brews is slated at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Vino Bellissimo, 2412 Cable Court, Lima. Local actors will share scenes and monologues from William Shakespeare’s MacBeth, Henry V, Twelfth Night, Hamlet, Midsummer Night’s Dream and Julius Caesar.

• Aaron Hertzfeld is scheduled to perform at Luke’s, 133 N. Main St., Bluffton, from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday.

• Memorial Day Fun Fest is slated at Midwest Shooting, 501 S. Dixie Highway, Lima, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, with food trucks and inflatables.

• WAR Wrestling has a show planned at Empowered Sports Center, 1730 N. Union St., Lima. Doors open at 4:30 p.m., with hall of fame inductions at 5:30 p.m. and wrestling at 7 p.m. Tickets are $21 in advance at Groamy’s CD’s and Tapes, 1206 W. Robb Ave., Lima, or $25 at the door.

• The Let’s Back the Blue 5K will be held from 9 to 11 p.m. Saturday at Auglaize County Fairgrounds, 1001 Fairview Drive, Wapakoneta. The Little Cop One Miler starts at 8:30 p.m. Online registration is closed for runners.
