LIMA — More than 20 students from area high schools have been learning about the Lima community since last fall.

Wednesday night was graduation night for the 2019 Allen Lima Youth Leadership class at Husky’s recreation hall.

The class broke into three groups, and each group was tasked with completing a project over the year.

One group dealt with the problem of teen mental health.

“We took a survey to see where it stems from and to get a feel for how we can try and lower our numbers for the future. We want to use this data to spread to the high schools to just let them know that it’s a thing, and it’s just not certain people; it’s all around it’s everybody involved in your high school community. If we let them know how many people are involved, they’ll want to get help,” said Kerrie Lesure, a senior from Allen East.

The A.L.L. Positivity group came up with the idea of using Instagram to promote positivity in all aspects of a person’s life.

“Our project is about reducing negativity in our society. You go on social media, and you see these people with great bodies, great things, and you’re just like, ‘I wish I could have that.’ Our job is just kind of using quotes to help reduce that negativity in society because people are on social media a lot,” said Fayme Gandhi, a junior at Bath High School.

Another group’s project dealt with substance abuse.

“Our project was to reduce drug use in teens and things like vaping, drinking or any other kind of drugs. Our goal was to create a Twitter account and spread messages about drugs and say like ‘Hey, don’t drink this weekend,’” said Adam Bockey, a junior at Delphos St. Johns High School.

Graduates in the 2019 ALL Lima Leadership Youth class included Adam Bockey from Delphos St. John’s, Michaela Cosart from Allen East, Peyton Craig from Lima Central Catholic High School, Alex Davis from Bath, Emma Delong from LCC, Baylor Garmatter from Bluffton, Derek Inskeep from Bath, Sumner Kibele from Bluffton, Fayme Gandi from Bath, Megan Latham from LCC, Karrie Lesure from Allen East, Tianna Long from Spencerville, Connor Nielson from Spencerville, Ross Otto from LCC, Rachel Plummer from Spencerville, Ashley Plummer from Spencerville, Ara Rexford from Lima Senior, Sophia Smucker from Bluffton and John Sreenan from LCC.
