DELPHOS — An expansion of K&M Tire is expected to bring 20 new jobs and roughly $1 million in new payrolls into Delphos in order to deal with the tire distributor’s increased regional demand.
“As we continue to add locations, we continue to need more and more people to work in our home office,” K&M Tire CEO Ken Langhals said. “We can see we will continue to grow, so we’ll continue to need good employees.”
The expansion will add 11,800 square feet to company’s corporate headquarters in Delphos, bringing the complex’s total space to 350,000 square feet. K&M Tire operates as a regional tire distributor, operating in 29 distribution centers concentrated primarily throughout the Midwest and northeastern United States.
The company currently employs roughly 200 people. The new expansion will add 20 more for those with skill sets in accounting.
The Allen County commissioners approved an enterprise zone tax abatement for the expansion during their Thursday morning meeting. With the City of Delphos giving its approval last Monday, K&M Tire is set to receive an abatement on 60% of its property taxes on the new expansion for the next 10 years.
This is the second time K&M Tire has received a tax abatement on an expansion recently. In 2018, the company added 10 new jobs after adding a 7,000-square foot expansion for its sale team.
Allen Economic Development Group Director of Business Development Cynthia Leis said offering such tax abatements helps businesses already in the region expand. She estimated roughly 80% of job growth comes from existing businesses, such as K&M Tire.
“We want them to stay in Delphos and continue to expand in Delphos,” Leis said.
Langhals said, “The other cities that we have locations in, they’re always begging us to add (workers), but Delphos and Allen County have always treated us pretty good.”
