LIMA — Since its opening 16 years ago, Downtown Sounds owner John Poling said the biggest transition the store has made is diversifying its business and becoming more than just a car stereo shop.
Downtown Sounds, 2193 Elida Road, offers car audio equipment and custom details like window tinting, rims, tires, chrome and remote starts. The shop also performs oil changes and electrical repair work, according to Poling.
Downtown Sounds’ audio selection includes Digital Designs, Hifonics, JVC, Kenwood, Massive Audio, Pioneer, Re Audio and Tview.
American Racing, Elure Wheels, Foose Wheels, MHT Wheels, Starr Wheels and Velocity Wheels are just some of the wheel brands that Downtown Sounds offers.
In August, Downtown Sounds experienced the biggest record month for tire and wheel sales for the year.
“Everyone tries to figure out what they’re going to do to make their business better,” said Poling. “Every year we keep doing what we know works. We have grown every year since 2002.”
Because technology and the car industry continue to change over the years, Downtown Sounds has found its niche in servicing cars about seven to eights year old. These cars typically need new stereos, amplifiers, sub woofers or speakers, according to Poling.
Quality products and community support is what Poling said has kept his business in operation for over 15 years.
“We have superior products that you won’t find better anywhere else,” said Poling. “We build to a standard and not a cost. We’re not here to sell a product. We are here to sell an experience.”
Downtown Sounds is also dedicated to providing quality customer service, according to Poling. Because of its great customer service the business does not advertise, according to Poling.
“We are not desperate, so our care factor goes up,” said Poling. “I’m a people person. I know how to diffuse situations and communicate with people. You don’t get on the corner of Cable and Elida screwing people over.”
