LIMA — On Mother’s Day in 2010 Justin and Amy Musil opened their first LuLu’s Diner location and now eight years later they have three locations with a new expansion in Wapakoneta.

When the couple had opened the first location on 2114 Spencerville Road in 2010, they did not expect to grow as quickly as they did. In the beginning their staff consisted of Justin, Amy, family members and friends who would fill in wherever and whenever needed.

“My uncle would jump on the fryer and the grill and my grandpa filled coffee and took care of the customers. Parents would come and help as well,” said Amy Musil. “My mom would often come in during lunch to run the cash register.”

Lulu’s Diner offers a variety of breakfast food like bacon, french toast, omelettes, breakfast sandwiches and pancakes. For lunch they offer a variety of sandwiches, salads and burgers.

It did not take long for the lunch/diner to pick up business. Within six months its staff grew to accommodate the many customers.

“When we first started we didn’t know how many people we needed to hire,” said Amy Musil. “We had originally planned on just hiring two cooks. But we actually run like three to four cooks each day, with three to four servers, a food runner and dishwashers.”

Within a year the diner became so busy that the couple decided it was time to expand and open another location. So in 2012 the Musils opened the location on 1321 Bellefontaine Ave.

“A lot of people thought we were crazy because they thought the Bellefontaine location would take away from our business at Spencerville location, but it didn’t,” said Amy Musil. “That expansion helped us better accommodate more customers.”

The new location in 2012 was just the first of many more expansions to come. A few years later an owner of a commercial building in Bluffton had contacted the couple about opening another location there.

“We were going in there to blow him off because we were happy with how business was going for us,” said Justin Musil. “He kept messaging us and badgering us about coming to look at the location so finally we gave in. When we looked at it and looked around, it just felt right.”

In 2015 they opened the location on 114 E College Ave. and now almost three years later the couple is currently working on the construction of a new Wapakoneta location on 802 Gardenia Drive.

With now three locations under their belt with over 40 employees the couple said that they are grateful for not only the support the community, but for their wonderful staff.

The community has been so welcoming,” Amy Musil. “From the loyalty from our customers to our family that supports us to our staff. We would never be anything without our staff hands down. It takes a team to do what we do everyday.”
