LIMA — One out of four seniors over the age of 65 suffer from a fall every year, and Walgreens Pharmacy and Area Agency on Aging 3 have partnered together to save as many seniors as they can, according to Brandon DePauli, store manager for the 701 N. Cable Road Walgreens location.
Walgreens Pharmacy, along with Area Agency on Aging 3, the Ohio Department of Aging, the Ohio Association of Area Agencies on Aging and area agencies on aging around Ohio have partnered to raise awareness on fall prevention.
“We have been doing a lot of collaborating lately,” said Miranda Ridenour, Area Agency on Aging 3 RSVP Program Director. “Anyone who wants to get the word out in the community and help the community members we are definitely willing to work with to get the word out. Anything that is going to benefit the community is going to benefit all of us because that’s what we are here to do.”
Area Agency on Aging 3 offers various free classes that help with fall prevention, including A Matter of Balance-Managing Concerns About Falls, which is offered from 10 a.m. to noon Thursdays from Sept. 6 to Oct. 25 at 50 North in Findlay. The class is also offered from 1 to 3 p.m. Mondays from Sept. 10 to Oct. 29 at the Hardin County Family YMCA.
Tuesday was Walgreen’s national Senior Day, a day dedicated to providing discounts to senior citizens, raising awareness for fall prevention and providing consultations to identify medicines that may increase the risk of falling.
“Billions of dollars get put into hospitalization of seniors who have fallen,” said DePauli. “If we can prevent those hospitalizations just by educating them on how to prevent those falls, it’s a win for us.”
