OTTAWA — Starting a lawn care business was not what Don Croy had imagined, but 31 years later he said it is one of the best decisions he and his family made.
It started back in 1987 when Croy’s wife, Teresa, was asked by her boss, a lawyer at the time, if her husband would be willing to mow the properties of a deceased client.
At the time Croy had been self-employed through another family owned business , but he and his sons, Jeff and Lyle, decided take up the opportunity. By the end of that year, they had seven other properties.
At first, the business was handled by his sons. However, once they went off to college Croy decided to quit his other job and his family established Croy’s Mowing LTD on 525 N Thomas St. in 1998.
It began simply as a mowing service and gradually developed into a business that offered parking lot cleaning, snow removal, landscape maintenance, mulching, shrub/tree trimming and landscape installation.
The company services residential and commercial properties in 16 counties including those in Putnam and Hancock county as well as properties in Lima. Croy has contracts with companies such as Procter & Gamble, Husky Lima Refinery and Mercy Health-St. Rita’s Medical Center.
The lawn care company owns 24 trucks and has 54 employees, many of whom are landscape industry certified. This national accreditation means those employees can demonstrate strict performance and safety standards in installation or maintenance.
“We think of our guys as their own mechanics out in the field,” said Croy. “Most companies, if a belt comes off, they have to wait for a company to come out and fix it. My employees can easily go pick up the parts and change the belts on their own.”
Croy values his employees and considers them like his family.
“We give people chances and we pride ourselves on being a family orientated company,” said Croy. “We are a mobile company and the guys come in and make it feel like a family.”
