Roses and Thorns

You’ve heard of a rose between two thorns, right? We have three thorns between two roses in the garden this week.

Rose: To the area’s graduates. Enjoy this celebration of your formal education. Much is expected of you going forward. We can’t wait to see how you change the world for the better.

Thorn: To officials at Allen Oakwood Correctional Institution, who were aware there were two missing inmates hours before alerting the public about the possible danger. We later learned the two escape inmates were last seen on video a day prior to being noticed in their routine counts. We respect the work done at the prison and the difficult work conditions, but people must properly do their jobs to keep themselves and our community safety.

Thorn: To whoever hit a Delphos bicyclist on Monday evening and didn’t stop to see what had been hit. We all must share the road with motorcyclists, bicyclists and walkers. Look out for each other out there.

Thorn: To the algae at Grand Lake St. Marys, which caused signs to pop up at beaches urging the public to avoid all contact with the water. We’re sick of those algal blooms and their toxins.

Rose: To bird-watchers in Putnam County, who identified a species new to the area, a Mourning Warbler, during an event at Quarry Farm.
