St. Rita’s to welcome 26 new residents

LIMA — Mercy Health-St. Rita’s Medical Center has matched with 26 medical students who will complete their residencies in Lima starting in June, the health system announced in a press release Friday.

St. Rita’s has welcomed 26 new resident physicians to Lima each year since 2019 when the health system added new residencies in emergency medicine, internal medicine and family medicine. The health system previously only trained pharmacy and podiatry residents.

“When starting the Graduate Medical Education program at St. Rita’s, we did so with the intent of both being on the forefront of medical education and ensuring quality health care for our community,” Dr. Matt Owens, chief clinical officer for Mercy Health – Lima, said in a press release.

“As these programs mature,” Owens said, “we are realizing the benefit to health care quality, care delivery and provider recruitment that our region must maintain to live out our mission well into the future. We are grateful for the opportunity to bring a new generation of physicians into our community.”
