Lima YMCA to hold Father-Daughter Dance

LIMA — For parents, 18 years can fly by in a heartbeat when it comes to their children. There is only so much time to create those lifelong memories with them. On Saturday, the Lima Family YMCA is giving fathers the opportunity to create some of those precious memories.

The YMCA will host a special night for area fathers and daughters from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday with its annual Father-Daughter Valentine Dance.

“I think this is an event that we’ve been doing for a few years now,” said Taylor Shimp, the youth and teen development director at the YMCA. “It’s basically just a night for dads to spend a good evening with their daughters. They get to dress up and wear fancy dresses and suits. And they get to spend time together, have a few refreshments, dance and get their pictures taken. It’s really just to bring the community together and spend time with each other.”

As Shimp said, fathers and daughters will be able to get their pictures taken together in photo booths for a cash fee and they will also be able to enter into a 50/50 raffle for prizes, as well as play fun games.

“We’ll also have some crafts on a few of our tables that they can do,” she said. “There will be balloons everywhere for them to play with too.”

Shimp, who enjoys quality time with her father like this, said that she thinks it is an important event for other fathers and daughters.

“It’s a great time to just spend one on one and have a fun night and make memories with your kids that they’ll remember for years from now,” she said. “They’ll be able to dress up and say, ‘My dad and I got our picture taken at a ball and it was super fun.’ Creating those memories with families is something that we really strive for.”

For fathers and daughters interested in coming to the dance, registering is as easy as visiting the YMCA website and signing up for the program. The event is free for members, but $6 for non-members.
