Hall of Fame sportswriter Tom Usher passes away

Veteran sportswriter Tom Usher, who has written for The Lima News since 1986, passed away over the weekend.

Usher, a native of Cincinnati, covered the high profile sports like basketball, football and baseball with great skill and passion but also frequently wrote with the same skill and passion about sports like soccer and hockey. He graduated from Cincinnati St. Xavier High School and received a bachelor’s degree from Xavier University.

After graduation, he worked in the sports information office of Xavier University. He spent several years working in the sports department of the Cincinnati Enquirer before being hired by The Lima News.

He was inducted into the Ohio Prep Sportswriters Hall of Fame in 2014 and won many awards for his writing.

“Tom was literally a hall of fame sportswriter for The Lima News, detailing the highest athletic achievements of our region’s high school and college athletes for 30-plus years,” said David Trinko, editor of The Lima News.

“Even after retiring, he continued covering games for us. He was so dedicated to his mission. This is a great loss to the region and to The Lima News.”
