St. Marys notches Spartan Wrestling Invitational title

LIMA — St. Marys sophomore Tate Hisey was getting accustomed to having his two older brothers on the team with him last season.

However, twins Trevor Hisey and Tyler Hisey graduated after last year and went on to wrestle at Lourdes University.

Last season, all three brothers competed at the Division II state wrestling tournament.

This season, Tate Hisey finds himself with other drilling partners at practice.

Apparently, this has not held up his progress.

At Saturday’s Spartan Wrestling Invitational at Lima Senior, Hisey won the title in the 120-pound weight class.

In his championship match, Hisey pinned Crestview’s Gavin Grubb, late in the second period.

“They always pushed me, and basically taught me,” Hisey said about his older brothers. “Not having them around this season is definitely tough, but I work through it. I still talk to them over the phone and they tell me what things I need to work on. So, they are still there to support me.”

Last season, Tate Hisey placed fifth at the Division II state tournament in the 106-pound weight class. So far this season, Hisey is undefeated (official record not available).

As a team on Saturday, St. Marys won the title at the Spartan Wrestling Invitational at Lima Senior. The Roughriders ended the day with 237 points.

Liberty-Benton (218.5), Mechanicsburg (199.5), Shawnee (158) and Allen East (146) rounded out the top five squads in a field of 18 teams.

St. Marys senior Keegan Sharpe won his title match at 150 pounds. Sharpe defeated Kenton’s Anthony Hunt in a hard-fought match, 5-2.

Sharpe (10-2) is coming back from an injury.

“I did not wrestle for about a week, because I had a shoulder injury,” Sharpe said. “So, I was a little nervous at first. But I knew if I came out with a lot of effort, I could win this (championship) match.”

Sharpe has set some high goals for this season.

“I made it to districts (last season) and wasn’t even close to making it to state. So, I’m hoping to change it this year,” Sharpe said.

Heavyweight Braden Saeler was the other champion for St. Marys on Saturday.

Kade Wireman named the most valuable wrestler

Allen East senior Kade Wireman has been on a mission.

Last season, Wireman placed third at the Division III state wrestling tournament in the 150-pound weight class.

At Saturday’s Spartan Wrestling Invitational, Wireman won the title at 157 pounds. However, he was not completely satisfied with his performance in his title match against Paulding’s Dawson Lamb.

Wireman (14-2) defeated Lamb 15-10 in the championship match. However, he was quick to critique his performance.

“I usually hit a lot of reversals over the season,” Wireman said after defeating Lamb. “I hardly ever give up any reversals at all, but I gave up two in that match. … I’m kind of disappointed in myself for that. I didn’t wrestle very well (in the finals). I don’t like to make up excuses at all.

“So, I have to go to practice all week and bust my tail, because we’re starting to get closer to the end of the season. I can’t wrestle like this toward the end of the season. I can’t be giving up reversals in any match.”

For his overall performance Saturday, Wireman was picked as the most valuable wrestler of the tournament.

Spencerville’s Miller remains unbeaten

Spencerville senior Carder Miller ran the table Saturday, en route to winning the title at 132.

Miller (18-0) pinned Liberty-Benton’s Lee Woods, early in the second period in the championship bout.

“I had a great day today. … I wrestled hard,” Miller said. “My finals match was great. I thought I wrestled really well. It was probably one of the better matches that I have wrestled this year. I finished it off with a pin, which I’m very happy about.”

Other champions Saturday included Bath’s Nolan Deppe (165), Liberty-Benton’s Avery Allen (144), Mechanicsburg’s Nolan Fraley (106), Wade Naff (126), Parker Cook (175), Ronnie Thomas (190) and Zane Hitchcock (215), Shawnee’s Ethan Morgan (138), Spencerville’s Nyah Hodge-Miller (113).
