Tableau drama fostering unity in churches

LIMA — It is not every day a work of art is portrayed in real life. However, the legendary Leonardo DaVinci painting of the Last Supper will soon come to life at a play at St. John’s Catholic Church in Lima.

Mary Blanche-Hengsleter was asked to help produce the play and thought that other churches should get involved.

“It is called come to the table,” said Hengsleter. “It is a last supper tableau-style drama, not very often seen. That is an old style of drama. It is a non-denominational combined faced event which we are so excited about.”

She also said more than 20 congregations will be involved in the drama. There will be local pastors, deacons, physicians and many community members involved in the portrayal of the last supper.

The art will also include a choir, soloists and dancers.

“We are trying to promote a wider sense of unity within the city of Lima and to give back to the needs of the community,” added Hengsleter.

This is not the first time the organizers have showcased this event. St. John’s Church also hosted this play in 2010.

“Father Ross came to me and said, ‘Hey, want to do this again?’ and I said, ‘Hey, I have a better idea. Let’s do it and open it up to other churches’”, said Hengsleter. “‘He said, ‘You think we can do that?’ and I said, ‘Well, with God all things are possible.’”

Hensleter runs a non-profit organization, Community Ministries, with the sole mission to unite the body of believers in the community. She said as she prayed over the event, God struck her with the idea of unity and bringing other churches together.

The drama will be held at 3 p.m. March 26. St. John’s Church is located at 777 S. Main St.

Community members attending the play are asked to bring non-perishable food items as a donation. The team is also looking for community members to purchase ads to help with the costs.
