Roses and Thorns

Some roses take 95 years to come to full bloom.

Rose: To Joe Correll and Michael Bouson for celebrating the 95th anniversary of a downtown landmark, the Ohio Theatre. The celebration Thursday was “jubilant and hopeful,” according to The Lima News article on the event. The anniversary brought together several prominent members of the community to reflect on the history of this venue, one which Correll and Bouson hope will become a premier entertainment destination in Lima.

Thorn: To whoever called in a false active shooter report at Temple Christian School, along with a similar false report at Liberty Benton School in Hancock County. While the report was thankfully false, it was not only a waste of law enforcement time and resources, but it was also a mean-spirited hoax that caused undue stress and anxiety on teachers, staff and students.

Rose: To Ohio State University at Lima for promoting awareness and gathering donations for the homeless at its “Buckeye Soup” event Monday. Not only did students get the chance to enjoy a hot cup of soup, but they also were reminded that it is important to give back to those who have fallen on hard times.

Thorn: To the sad reality that Shirley’s Popcorn in Lima will be closing its doors Dec. 23. For over six years, the Bluffton-based company brought its signature popcorn creations to its Eastown Road facility. However, increased costs have forced the company to consolidate in Bluffton. An honorary rose goes to owners Pete and Kim Suter for their time here in Lima.
