This week’s updates on the coronavirus pandemic

• The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Thursday elevated Hardin County’s COVID-19 exposure risk from medium to high, reversing the county’s downgraded risk status from the previous week. Putnam and Van Wert counties were also changed from low risk to medium risk after a brief downgrade last week, while Allen County remained at medium risk for a second consecutive week.

There were an estimated 14.9 new hospital admissions per 100,000 people in Allen County in the last seven days, an increase from the previous week. Patients with COVID-19 illness declined in that same time frame, occupying 2.8% of staffed hospital beds instead of last week’s 3.2% total.

• Allen County Public Health on Friday notified residents that supply of the new Moderna booster is limited, but the health department has plenty of Pfizer boosters available for anyone who plans to receive their booster shot in the coming days.

The updated boosters from Pfizer and Moderna use a bivalent formula designed to target the original SARS-CoV-2 virus and the omicron variant, now the most prevalent version of the virus circulating in Ohio.

Anyone age 12 and older whose last COVID-19 vaccine was at least two months ago is eligible for one of the boosters. Children under 18 are only eligible for the Pfizer booster at this time. Allen County Public Health will hold adult vaccination clinics at its office, 219 E. Market St., Lima, from 9-11 a.m. and 1 to 3:30 p.m. on Mondays and Fridays by appointment only.
