Plans begin to refresh Lima’s southside

LIMA — A new non-profit organization is being birthed in the city to refresh south Lima’s neighborhoods. The South Lima Community Development Corporation was developed by community members who desired to bring new life and restoration.

“Our goal is to the physical appearance of south Lima neighborhoods and assist with its economic revitalization,” SLCDC President Saul Allen said. “We will work collaboratively to address social issues, improve the quality of life for our targeted area and create equity through programs focused on improving environmental management, affordable housing development, food systems, economic vitality and land use policies.”

The SLCDC plans to make its debut by reviving the exterior of Momma Dot’s Soul Food Kitchen at 1290 St. Johns Ave., Lima. The restaurant, formerly known as Rib Cage, has been in business for more than 10 years.

Owner Dorothy Knuckles shared her surprise and excitement when discovering the community plans to help.

”A man called me one day and said he wanted to paint this building,” Knuckles said. “That truly got me. You just do not know how I felt. It needs it so badly. I was just telling my husband I wanted to paint it. I was wondering if I should paint it first or get a new roof. When the man called, I wanted to know his name so I would know how much he would charge. He responded: ‘Just say yes.’ I truly thank him for it.

“I want to join in later and try to help someone else. It is so appreciated, I don’t know what to do.”

Community members are welcome to join to help paint the restaurant. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10 at 1290 St. Johns Ave. According to a press release, the project will have free hot dogs and hamburgers. There will also be an opportunity for community members to meet and share resources with the partners of the SLCDC.

“Our heart is to build a better Lima,” said Sherri Gary, SLCDC vice president. “We want to be inclusive in new projects and revitalize the south side of Lima. We want to develop new community things so our children and neighborhoods can be safe. We want to unite as a family. We are looking forward to this first project. When businesses thrive, we also thrive.”
