Ada blanks Lima Senior, 9-0

One down. Nine to go and perhaps more.

Despite winning two games last year, first-year Ada head coach Doug Dewese has set a goal of 10 wins this season for the Bulldogs and the team took its first step toward achieving that lofty feat after beating Lima Senior 9-0 in the season opener for both squads.

“This is a good way, strong way to open the season,” Dewese said. “We have a potent offense when it clicks and it was clicking tonight. Obviously getting on the board quick helps us out and in games like this we can get a lot of different players in a lot of different positions and some time on the field.

“Lima Senior never gave up and they kept fighting and fighting so it was a good game.”

Dewese added this serves to give the team confidence early.

“We take this as a confidence builder and go off of it,” Dewese said. “We have some games that I have kind of earmarked for them that they can win if they put some effort in so they have to have this as a confidence builder.

“I may have been a little ambitions this season but our goal is 10 (wins). I look at some that we really should get and I look as some that if we put the effort in we can win.”

Ada got things rolling early by punching in four goals in the first 10 minutes of the game. By halftime, the Bulldogs led 7-0 and then added the final two in the second half.

Bulldog Ella Marshall paved the way with a hat trick, scoring all three of her goals in the first 11 minutes of the game. Kailey Wagner, Karley Wagner, Lexi Poling, Karmen Hall and Ella Badertscher put in scores.

Lima Senior head coach Paul Fronzaglia, also fielding a young squad, said the team showed small signs of improvement as the game progressed and is optimistic this team can develop as the season continues.

“We are a very young team from an experience standpoint,” Fronzaglia said. “For several of the girls this was their first real, live soccer action that they had and they showed tremendous growth from the opening whistle to the end of the game.

Fronzaglia added that it took some time for some the girls to get acclimated to the speed of the game.

Showing some of that moxie was Spartan goalie Allison Fronzaglia who made some spectacular saves in the second half to limit the Bulldogs to two scores.

“I think that was an eye opener for some of them and they grew into as the game went along. We are a little shorthanded right now but that is supposed to be changing here shortly within the next week. We have a few reinforcements coming in next week and having a few extra subs coming off the bench is going to help.

“I am really proud of the way the girls stuck it out through the whole game. They showed a lot of strength and composure and I see a lot of promising things for the future this year.”
