Roses and Thorns

It’s hard to grow grass much less roses in the recent dry heat, but there still have been some roses in the garden.

Rose: To the family of former Illinois and Michigan football head coach Gary Moeller, who died this week. We know losing him must be difficult for your family. We’re happy you chose to let him live out his final years back in the familiar setting of his hometown of Lima.

Thorn: To Ryan A. Aab, the 13-year-old who escaped the Allen County Juvenile Detention Center on Monday. You must face the consequences of your actions and not run from them. We’re also frustrated that law enforcement was so slow to identify Aab and still hasn’t shared an image of who we’re supposed to find.

Thorn: To Wapakoneta Police Department and the city’s law director, for not releasing the dashcam or bodycam footage in a case that led to the arrest of two Lima Police Department officers, including the woman whose injuries led to a 911 call in the first place. They haven’t responded to an attorney for The Lima News in our fight to see what really happened. We anticipate the footage will answer a lot of lingering questions.

Rose: To authorities in their dogged fight against drug crimes. They showed their perseverance Thursday when Terrance Mays was sentenced on a drug crime for which he’d pleaded guilty 27 years earlier, then vanished. He was reportedly in town to visit his mother when he was stopped on a traffic violation.
