Roses and Thorns

This week’s rain hasn’t done its job yet; the thorns are growing faster than the roses.

Rose: To the organizers behind the Star Spangled Spectacular, who treated residents to a top-notch fireworks show on July 4. It’s a great way to celebrate our independence, and we’re lucky to have such a good show this close to home.

Thorn: To people infected with syphilis who aren’t telling their sexual partners. It led to a 40% increase in cases so far this year compared to 2020. The infections include four pregnant women and two infants. People need to be aware of diseases like this, especially since syphilis can cause brain damage, blindness, deafness and even deaf if left untreated.

Rose: To former Putnam County Lori Rayle, who died Sunday at the age of 61. It’s sad to see someone who spent 15 years in the office before taking over the top job two years ago die unexpectedly.

Thorn: To James Marion Jr., of Lima, who tried to sprint away from a transport van on his way into the Allen County jail following a municipal court appearance. He was captured within two blocks, and his poor choice will only tack on additional, more serious charges. Just wait for your release once the criminla justice system does its job.

Thorn: To Zachary Hughes, 27, who pleaded guilty to reckless homicide and trafficking in a fentanyl-related compound. He helped provide the drug that killed his half-brother’s mother in April 2021. He faces up to four years in prison.
