CLYDE — Grace Brickner may be a freshman but she played with the confidence of an upperclassman and it helped Lincolnview to a 3-2 win against Hilltop to capture the Division IV regional title Saturday and earned the Lancers a trip to the state tournament.

Lincolnview (24-4) advances to the state semifinal game against Jeromesville Hillsdale, a 6-5 winner against Hopewell-Loudon, at Firestone Stadium in Akron at 12:30 p.m. Friday. Hilltop ends its season with a 24-5 mark. This is the Lancers first final four appearance in softball.

“I am just really excited for the girls,” Lincolnview head coach Eric Schwab said. “They worked their tails off all season. We have a supportive community and an administration that has your back. It is everybody.”

Brickner went 3 for 3 and drove in all three runs to come up with the clutch hits for Lincolnview and her poise was evident in the sixth inning.

Down 2-1 heading into the top of the sixth, the Lancers opened up the frame when Taylor Post drew a walk and Braxton Sherrick followed with a single. Andi Webb then laid down a perfectly placed bunt for the sacrifice to advance Post and Sherrick to second and third and one out. Zadria King hit a sharp grounder to the shortstop and Post was gunned down at the plate to prevent the run and it appeared the Lancers might miss another scoring opportunity. Prior to that, Lincolnview had stranded five runners.

But Brickner delivered her third hit of the game to score Sherrick and King and give the Lancers the lead for good.

“No, I didn’t feel any pressure,” Brickner said. “I knew I could do it. I knew we could do it. We always find a way to comeback and I knew that we had it in us.”

All three of Brickner’s hits came with two outs and her first single, in the second inning, scored Sherrick who had doubled to open the inning. Also coming up with multiple hit games were Kendall Bollenbacher who finished 2 for 4 and Sherrick who went 2 for 4 with two runs scored.

“She (Brickner) battled all day,” Schwab said. “She is going to be a heck of a ball player. She just battles at the plate and she takes what they give her. It was Grace’s day today so heck it can be anybody.”

Not only did Brickner perform at the plate but she also got the job done behind the dish as she helped Post pick up the win. The Lancer defense also did its part to as Hilltop was limited to six hits.

“Taylor does a good job,” Brickner said. “She knows I have her back and she has my back.”

Post pitched the complete game and fanned six while walking one.

Like her battery mate, Post showed poise when it mattered in the challenging fourth when Hilltop scored its two runs. In that inning the Cadets had four hits but the damage was limited after Post picked up key strikeouts to stop Hilltop’s momentum.

In the final two innings, Post sat down the last six out of seven batters and allowed one walk.

Not to be overlooked was a spectacular grab by rightfielder Makayla Jackson in the second inning.

“Our defense has been pretty solid all tournament,” Schwab said. “We had a scouting report and we stuck to that. Taylor pitched that to a tee.

“These girls all season have not gotten rattled and when we get down we stick together and get back in it and that is what we did in the sixth inning when we scored two and think were 2 for 7 with runners in scoring position and we were missing that big hit all day and finally got that in the sixth inning.”
