ELIDA — Elida’s Larkin Henderson made the most of his opportunity.

Making his first start at the varsity level, the Bulldog righthander fired a three-hit shutout to propel Elida to a 2-0 win against Lima Senior in the annual Harmon/Williams Memorial game Saturday.

Elida improves to 6-9 on the season and brings the Harmon/Williams trophy back to the Bulldogs for the first time since 2018. Lima won the game in 2019, the game was not played in 2020, and the Spartans were victorious in 2021.

Played since 2007, Elida leads the series 10-3. The game was not played in 2011.

The game is played in honor of Scott G. Harmon, a former Elida player, and Tyler Williams, a Lima Senior graduate, who played baseball for Bluffton University and were killed in a bus accident while on a spring trip to Florida with the Beavers in 2007.

Lima Senior falls to 1-14 for the year.

“The trophy has been gone for too long,” Elida head coach Todd Grapner said. “It means a lot to us. It means a lot to the Harmon family. They are always here and support us and coach (Tony) Moore, who has been with me for a long time, and was on the bus with those guys, so it has a special meaning for us and coach Moore in particular. It is kind of emotional because of that. It feels really good to get it back.”

In his seven innings of work, Henderson gave up three hits while fanning nine. Five of those strikeouts ended innings, including in the final frame.

In the seventh, Lima Senior opened the inning with back-to-back base hits, but Henderson recorded a strikeout, induced a pop-fly to the third baseman and then whiffed the final batter to end the threat and secure the win.

“Larkin was so good today,” Grapner said. “We have used him in a lot of relief this year and this is his first start and what a Bulldog he was for us today with a complete game shutout. It was his first varsity start as a pitcher.

“He did a great job for us today. He was pounding the zone and didn’t get rattled when things got dicey there and just showed a lot of leadership for us today.”

Getting run support was not easy for Henderson as Lima Senior lefty Brandon Griffith put in a strong outing

“Brandon threw really well,” Lima Senior head coach Casey Reed said. “We have always had a guy, and he is our guys in big games. He is only a sophomore so he is still learning how to throw. He gave a heck of an effort today. We just didn’t get the hits when we needed them but Brandon did well. He got in a jam a couple of times and got out of them. He did what he needed to do to get out of innings but just couldn’t get out of one more.

“We had the opportunities but we just didn’t capitalize on them and that is what it comes to. This game is more important than just what the scoreboard says. At the end of the day, Scott and Tyler are looking down and enjoyed watching the game today.”

The Spartan pitcher went six innings, giving up six hits and striking out six. He did not give up a hit until the fourth frame.

Elida broke through in the sixth with two runs, and it began with Gabe Adcock opening with a single and Mike Niebel was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. Looking to move the runners over, Brady Kirk laid down a bunt that he beat out to load the bases.

Bulldog Ryan McGue brought home the first run with a sacrifice fly to left and the second run came on a squeeze play when Tyler Carter put down the sensational bunt that allowed Niebel to score as Carter reached first.

“It was a struggle for us all day,” Grapner said. “Their kid pitched really well too so what a big hit for a freshman Gabe Adcock. He stepped up and started that inning for us and we got two huge bunts from Grady Kirk and Tyler Carter and doing the little things led to big things and that is what happened to us in that inning.”
