WAPAKONETA — Celina senior Landon Engle doesn’t get caught up in milestones.

In fact, Engle was a little surprised when he realized how close he was to notching his 150th career victory on the wrestling mat.

At Saturday’s Wapakoneta Invitational, Engle garnered his 150th win in his semifinal match against Van Wert’s Ashton Baer in the 132-pound weight class. Engle then went on to record a 10-3 decision in the championship match against Jeremiah Thomas from Conner (Kentucky).

Engle (31-0) also kept his undefeated season record intact.

“It wasn’t something I really thought about,” Engle said about his 150th win. “I really didn’t pay attention to where I was going to be at, or where I was going to end at, exactly. I was kind of surprised when they started talking about it.

“I really didn’t think about it much, until this year. It kind of came out of nowhere. But it does feel good to hit that milestone.”

Last year, Engle qualified for the Division II state tournament, where he went 1-2.

This season, Engle not only wants to get back to the state tournament, but he wants to be in contention.

“My ultimate goal is to finish at least top four at state,” Engle said. “But I will always shoot for number one. I never want to be satisfied at where I’m at. I always have to dig deeper. You always want to go for the top spot.”

As a team Saturday, Celina finished a close third, behind Western Buckeye League-rival Wapakoneta.

Vandalia-Butler decisively won the team title Saturday, scoring 284.5 points. Wapakoneta ended the day with 236.5 points, while Celina had 223.5 points. Conner (155.5) and Evergreen (137) rounded out the top five squads in the 11-team field.

Along with Engle, Tyler Carlin (175) won a title for Celina on Saturday. Carlin pinned Wapakoneta’s Jace Knous, early in the second period in the title match.

Lima Senior’s Aaron Bowsher won the title in the 150-pound weight class. Bowsher defeated Antwerp’s Eli Reinhart, 8-3, in the championship bout.

“First period, I really had to pick it up,” Bowsher said in reference to his title match. “The plan from the beginning was to really push the pace, get a couple takedowns and secure the lead. Once I got on top, I started hammering it.”

Bowsher (22-4), a senior, is aiming for a deep postseason tournament run, which will hopefully culminate at the state tournament.

“That’s the big goal of the whole year,” Bowsher said. “All these tournaments are warmups. You really try to improve until then (postseason tournament). You don’t want to peak now. … You want to peak then (postseason tournament).”

Coldwater senior Caleb Stammen won the title at 190 on Saturday. In his title match, Stammen pinned Vandalia-Butler’s Tyler Pennington in the first period.

“In my finals, he was strong,” Stammen said about Pennington. “But I made a good move, and got him fast.”

However, the trek this season for Stammen has been challenging.

“I messed up my shoulder in football,” Stammen said. “So, it’s affected some parts of my season. But today, I’m doing good. I went 5-0 with five pins, and I got my 100th (career) win today.”

Last wrestling season, Stammen placed eighth at the Division III state tournament. Stammen wants to make a return to the state tournament in March.

“The biggest thing right now is to keep myself healthy, and everything will fall into place,” he said.

As a team Saturday, Coldwater placed sixth.

Other champions on Saturday included Conner’s Sebastian Vega (106), Donovan Taylor (157) and Cooper Elliston (215), Delphos Jefferson’s Anthony Bodine (144), Evergreen’s Brodie Setmire (113), Grant Richardson (165) and Cody Sheller (285), Vandalia-Butler’s Noah Moreland (120), Parker Lee (126) and AJ Turner (138).
