LIMA — Lima Senior has a lot of depth this season but even the Spartans could not overcome the absence of three of its players as they fell to Mansfield Senior 61-59 in overtime Saturday night.

In overtime, Mansfield Senior’s Amil Upchurch hit two free throws with 44 seconds left to secure the victory. Lima Senior had one desperation shot at the end of the game but the it fell short. It was Upchurch’s only two points of the game.

Lima Senior goes to 1-1 on the season and Mansfield Senior improves to 2-0.

Spartan Khalil Luster, Jareon Mayo and Brent Moss were serving a one-game suspension due to participating in an unsanctioned event and their absence was most felt on the offensive end .

“We should have won that game,” Lima Senior head coach Quincey Simpson said. “We missed free throws. We got killed on the glass. You have crucial turnovers and you miss a ton of layups at home and you can’t expect to win. It is that simple.”

Without that trio of players, Lima Senior’s offense struggled to find any consistency throughout and made an number of uncharacteristic turnovers in the contest but was aided by the teams’ hard nosed defense that kept them in a contest against a Mansfield team that matched the Spartans’ speed and quickness.

In the first half, Lima Senior had 14 turnovers.

“In the first half the turnovers killed us,” Simpson said. “We got guys losing defensive assignments and you can’t have those things happen, again, at home, against a scrappy team like Mansfield. We had our opportunities to win. We missed some key layups. We didn’t get stops and we didn’t get some key rebounds, offensively, and that is the end of the game. That is two things we talk about all the time, defending and rebounding. We didn’t do those two things when the game counted.”

Camren Miles was the Spartans most consistent offensive performer as he poured in 26 points. Anthony Mosley had a double double performance after scoring 13 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.

Simpson used 12 different players throughout the contest.

“Guys are still fighting for minutes,” Simpson said. “Guys are still trying to prove where they belong in the rotation. I was impressed with Isaiah Wilson, a freshman, who came in defensively and gave us an enormous boost so guys are still trying to figure out where they fit in.”

The contest remained close throughout as neither team was able to go on a significant offensive run. At the end of the first period, Mansfield Senior led 18-17 and at halftime the Tygers owned a 36-32 lead. The four-point advantage was the largest lead either team had in the game.

Going into the final period the score was knotted at 46 and the while both teams had chances to win in regulation the score stayed at 56-56 going into overtime.

Mansfield Senior’s Nathaniel Haney led the way for the Tygers with 19 points.
