Lima Senior closed out its boys basketball season opener with a blistering 21-4 run in the final six minutes to get a 63-49 win over Findlay on Friday night.

Brent Moss scored 22 points, 12 of them in the final six minutes, and had 8 rebounds to lead the Spartans on their home court in a match-up of two of the three teams who tied for the Three Rivers Athletic Conference championship last season. Khalil Luster scored 17 points for the Spartans.

Findlay (1-1, 0-1 TRAC) got 18 points from Jake Bishop and 11 points from Brock Makrancy.

Findlay led 18-10 after one quarter and was up 24-17 halfway through the second quarter before Lima Senior cut the Trojans’ lead to three points, 31-28, at halftime and to one point, 43-42, after three quarters.

Much of Findlay’s early lead came from a barrage of 3-pointers in the first eight minutes of the game when it hit five from long distance, including two each by Bishop and Makrancy. But the Trojans did not hit another 3-pointer the rest of the game.

Findlay’s final lead, at 45-42 with 6:09 left in the game, came on a bucket by Bishop. After that, it was all Lima Senior.

“Findlay is not a team you want to open up your season with,” Lima Senior coach Quincey Simpson said. “We grew in that game. I thought the guys matured in the second half. They sat down on defense and did a better job. We didn’t shoot the ball well at all and this is a group of guys that is always in the gym getting shots,” he said.

Findlay had only 14 turnovers against Lima Senior’s pressure defense but it might have worn the Trojans down a bit even without the turnovers.

“I thought I saw those guys take a deeper breath in the second quarter. We didn’t turn them over as much as we wanted. Our run and jump, our pressure defense, is not where we would like it to be. We still have a lot of growing to do. But it was a good win against a good, well-coached team with really good fundamental kids who can make shots,” Simpson said.

Findlay coach Jim Rucki said, “The game is all about shots around the basket— making yours and rebounding the misses. We probably didn’t do a good enough job at either of those two things. They had two or three guys flying at you around the basket.

“We couldn’t stop them from rebounding their misses and we couldn’t stop the penetration in the second half.

Talking about the Trojans’ 3-point drought after the first quarter, he said, “There are nights where those aren’t going to go down. To get the job done you have to rebound better and execute a little better. We couldn’t run some things. But give them credit for that, I guess. They took us out of some things. But I thought for the most part we competed. We lost our poise a little bit but we have to learn from this and get better.”
