Coach’s analysis: We are looking to compete every night out and see steady growth throughout the season. We want to be in position for a tournament run come March.

Celina

Division: II

Coach: Adam Johns (second season)

2020-21 overall record: 5-16

2020-21 league record: 3-6 (tied for seventh)

Coach’s analysis: We are going to continue to take steps forward as a program. We also need to set our inexperienced varsity players up to speed to blend/play with our experienced core group of players. We want to be playing our best basketball heading into the tournament.

Elida

Division: II

Coach: Matt Tabler (first season)

2020-21 overall record: 5-17

2020-21 league record: 2-7 (ninth)

2021 postseason finish: Lost 85-31 to Shawnee in sectional finals.

Others that may start season on varsity roster: Tori Thomas (Jr.), Jackson Covault (Soph.), David Etzkorn (Soph.), Seth Sharp (Soph.), X’zorion Island (Fr.), Jaylen Jones (Soph.), Kahliq Wash (Fr.)

Coach’s analysis: Our goal every day is to get better on the defensive end. We are a very young team that is learning a new system and playing in a very tough WBL with a tough non-league schedule. If we continue to progress on the defensive end and continue working on rebounding, we will continue to get better.

Kenton

Division: II

Coach: Ryan Miller (first season)

2020-21 overall record: 0-17

2020-21 league record: 0-7 (10th)

2021 postseason finish: Lost 69-66 to Elida in sectional semifinals.

Returning 2020-21 varsity letter winners: Jarrett Jolliff (Sr.), Gunnar Stout (Sr.), Kooper Johnston (Jr.), Gavin Payne (Soph.)

Others on varsity roster: Brent Rader (Sr.), Tyson Lawrence (Jr.), Colby Quay (Jr.), Seth Manns (Jr.), Trevor Robinson (Jr.), Parker Rarey (Jr.), Ethan Yoder (Soph.), Korbin Johnston (Fr.)

Coach’s analysis: We are very optimistic about this season. The players are hungry to see success. We will look to push the ball up the court with every possession and be aggressive on the defensive end of the court.

Ottawa-Glandorf

Division: III

Coach: Tyson McGlaughlin (13th season)

2020-21 overall record: 20-5

2020-21 league record: 7-2 (second)

2021 postseason finish: Lost 58-52 to Cleveland Heights Lutheran East in state semifinals.

Returning 2020-21 varsity letter winners: Colin White (Soph.), Carter Schimmoeller (Sr.), Eli Schmenk (Sr.), Carson Fuka (Sr.), Theo Maag (Jr.), Landen Jordan (Sr.), Caleb Kuhlman (Sr.), Hunter Stechschulte (Jr.)

Coach’s analysis: I’m excited for this group. We have some talented athletes that have the ability to score in a variety of ways. We are not as big as we’ve been in the past so we will have to make adjustments as the year goes by. We lost two guys (Owen Nichols and Brennen Blevins) who combined for 30 points a game from last year, so getting consistent production from guys will be important. We had a great summer and will play a fun style of basketball.

Shawnee

Division: II

Coach: Mark Triplett (ninth season)

2020-21 overall record: 25-2

2020-21 league record: 9-0 (first)

2021 postseason finish: Lost 71-42 to Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary in state semifinals.

Returning 2020-21 varsity letter winners: Brady Wheeler (Sr.), Ja’Mari Johnson (Sr.), Austin Miller (Jr.), Toby Freiberger (Jr.)

Others that may start season on varsity roster: Anthony Best (Sr.), Will McBride (Jr.), Zach Noonan (Jr.), Justin Altenbach (Sr.), Austin Fisher (Sr.), Trevor Bowers (Sr.), Keegan Wilson (Jr.)

Coach’s analysis: We are replacing four starters and a senior class that was the winningest in school history. We will be a much different team this season than we have been in the past, but we think we have a chance to be very competitive again this season. We bring back our starting point guard and three of our top four bench players from a season ago. We have a group of competitive kids with high expectations and standards. If we improve our team defense and find a way to consistently rebound the basketball, we feel our offense will give us a chance to win a lot of games.

St. Marys

Division: II

Coach: Daniel Hegemier

2020-21 overall record: 16-7

2020-21 league record: 5-3 (fourth)

2021 postseason finish: Lost 65-52 to Shawnee in district finals.

Varsity roster: Jadin Lotz (Jr.), Heath Dilsaver (Jr.), Andrew Moore (Sr.), Kyle Steininger (Sr.), Rylin Davis (Jr.), Braeden Hemmelgarn (Sr.), Brandon Bowers (Sr.), Cobain Owens (Soph.), Brayden Sullivan (Jr.), Gavin Reineke (Sr.), Jace Turner (Soph.), Evan Angstmann (Soph.), Ryan Meier (Sr.), Austin Parks (Jr.)

Van Wert

Division: II

Coach: Ben Laudick (third season)

2020-21 overall record: 11-11

2020-21 league record: 5-4 (fifth)

2021 postseason finish: Lost 51-30 to Defiance in sectional finals.

Returning 2020-21 varsity letter winners: Nathan Jackson (Sr.), Ethan Brown (Sr.), Trey Laudick (Sr.), Tyson Jackson (Sr.), Connor Pratt (Sr.), Garett Gunter (Jr.), Aidan Pratt (Jr.)

Others that may start season on varsity roster: Maddix Crutchfield (Jr.), Nate Phillips (Jr.), Carson Smith (Jr.), Luke Wessell (Jr.), Logan Dotson (Jr.)

Coach’s analysis: Van Wert returns four starters from last year’s 11-11 basketball team, but they will have to replace four year starter and two time first team WBL shooting gaurd Owen Treece, who finished his career with 1,359 points for the Cougars. Van Wert will return a total of seven lettermen and will add a few more juniors to the rotation to round out their squad for the 2021-22 campaign. Van Wert has good team depth, quickness, and athleticism. Despite the late start again this year because of the football team’s success, the Cougars are excited to get the season rolling and look forward to the challenges their schedule presents this upcoming season.

Wapakoneta

Division: II

Coach: Trey Elchert (second season)

2020-21 overall record: 13-10

2020-21 league record: 3-5 (sixth)

2021 postseason finish: Lost 44-24 to Wauseon in sectional finals.

Returning 2020-21 varsity letter winners: Zach Rogers (Sr.), Kaden Siefring (Sr.), Braeden Goulet (Sr.), John Buchanan (Sr.), Grant Bauer (Jr.), Jackson Courter (Jr.),

Others on varsity roster: Amir Bryant (Sr.), Logan Crow (Jr.), Zac Niekamp (Soph.), Taylor Echols (Soph.), Nate Metzger (Soph.), Deacon Retterer (Jr.)

Coach’s analysis: We lost our top two scorers from last season due to graduation. However, we feel we have a nice nucleus of guys back. Rogers, Siefring, and Goulet all played 25 plus minutes per game last year, while Buchanan, Bauer, and Carter all made valuable contributions off the bench throughout the year. We feel we have good depth in our sophomore, junior, and senior classes and will expect numerous guys to play big roles throughout the year. Our schedule presents a lot of challenges, but also the opportunity to play a lot of really good competition. The WBL is as good as any league around. Two teams are coming off Final Four appearances.
