MANSFIELD – Ottoville, with a little help from the crossbar and some precision kicking, beat Central Christian, 1-0, after out kicking the Comets in a shootout 5-3 Wednesday night.

With the win, Ottoville advances to the Division III regional final against Ottawa-Hills at 5 p.m. Saturday at Tiffin.

In the shootout, the Big Green scored all five of its kicks as Will Miller, Preston Mansfield, Carter Horstman, Troy Landwehr and Grant Leis, who’s final shot gave the Big Green the win.

For Central Catholic, the Comets made their first shot but Aaron Miedel missed his shot that glanced off the crossbar and that opened the door for the Big Green to secure the win.

Both teams battled to a scoreless tie in regulation as the two defenses were determined not to give up a goal.

Neither team had a solid scoring opportunity in the first half, but that changed in the second half as both teams looked to get that score that might sway the momentum.

Ottoville came on strong with a little more than 30 minutes left in the game when they produced four big scoring opportunities that got turned away by Comet keeper Tyler Bonner..

Central Christian got a couple of chances in the latter stages of the second half but the Big Green defense came up strong with big turnaways.

The same held true in both overtimes as both teams had scoring chances but came up short.
