KALIDA — For the past two seasons, Kalida has put an end to Ottoville’s season.

But this year, the Big Green turned the tables on their Putnam County rivals by posting a 1-0 overtime victory to secure a Division III district title Saturday.

With the win, Ottoville improves to 12-2-5 overall and advances to play Kidron Central Christian, a 2-0 winner against Independence, at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Mansfield Senior. Kalida finishes with a 10-7-3 mark. This marks the Big Green’s first trip to regionals since 2010.

“That was the only motivation we needed going into this game is knowing what has happened the last two years and I said `guys if that don’t motivate you I don’t know what does.’”

Ottoville’s Preston Mansfield provided the winning goal with 3:48 left in the contest and the Big Green sophomore can give the field an assist.

Despite both teams with top scorers it was little surprise that the game went into overtime with no team scoring. During the regular season, the two teams battled to a 0-0 tie.

The other major factor to little scoring was the field conditions. The pitch was rain soaked and slowly deteriorated as the teams went up and down the field looking for any type of opening or a slip by the opposition and that is exactly what happen on Mansfield’s winning score.

After Mansfield worked the ball inside the 18-yard line, several Kalida defenders made several attempts to stop Mansfield but slipped by him, leaving the Big Green forward for a clear shot around 12 yards out, and he struck it into the back of the net.

“I mean the conditions speak for itself,” Ottoville head coach Dustin Markward said. “We knew this game was going to get ugly. Both sides could not get a touch on the ball. Footing was going to be a disaster and it showed and going into this game all it was going to take was one. Kalida battled really well and like I said we needed to get just one.

Markward added that he told his team not to take too many risks.

“You don’t want to lose your footing like they did there at the end,” Markward said. “That was my biggest fear coming into here was defensively you have to be able to see the ball and put yourself in position and if you get out of position you might slip and a guy might get by and honestly that is what I said today, and it decided the game.”

Kalida head coach Ryan Birkemeier echoed his counterpart’s sentiments about the field conditions.

“Talent kind of shows a little bit in these kind of conditions,” Birkemeier said. “It was definitely difficult for us to get our footing initially but they had to play in the same conditions but we came out flat to start with and we had to work our way towards that and played a lot better in the second half, especially towards the second part of the second half but in the overtime we kind of lost it here in the back and they got a good chance on goal and they put it in.”
