Toledo St. Francis took advantage of two Lima Senior turnovers to help spark the Knights to a 20-19 victory in a Three Rivers Athletic Conference contest Friday night.
Lima Senior, losers of four straight, fall to 3-6 on the year and 2-4 in the TRAC. St. Francis improves to 4-6 and 2-4 in the conference.
The Knights recovered a Spartan fumble in the final five minutes of the fourth quarter to get the go-ahead touchdown and took advantage of an interception at the end of the first half to record a touchdown, accounting for two of the three Knight scores.
Lima Senior did have an opportunity late in the game after the Knights scored its touchdown with 5:31 left in the game to go up 20-19 when the Spartans, on the strength of an excellent kick off return from Cecil Benton, gave Lima Senior excellent field position at the 48 yard line.
The Spartans moved into the red zone on three plays, however, the drive stalled and Lima Senior found itself loo0king to go ahead with a 31-yard field goal with 3;33 left in the game. However, Toledo St. Francis blocked Lima Senior’s Aaron Bowsher’s 31 yard field goal attempt to secure the win.
Lima Senior’s offense once again had an up-and-down performance.
Spartan quarterback Aiden Howard finished 6 of 10 for 189 yards and one touchdown and one interception. Howard’s scoring toss was to DJ Clark for 28 yards to give Lima Senior a 19-14 lead with 9:52 left in the game.
Howard, who had 52 yards in the first half, passed for 137 yards in the second half.
Lima Senior’s Cecil Benton did his part on special teams and defense as the senior had a 80 yard punt return for a touchdown to get Lima Senior to within two, 14-12 midway through the fourth quarter and also recorded an interception on defense.
Lima Senior’s defense held the Knights to 41 yards rushing for the game and 204 yards passing but the Spartans could not overcome the two turnovers.
St. Francis quarterback Denim Truss was 17 of 30 with 204 yards with one touchdown and one interception.
St. Francis de Sales held a slim 7-6 over Lima Senior at halftime.
The Spartans got off to a quick start and scored on its first possession on a time consuming 15 play, 67 yard to hit paydirt. Spartan quarterback who completed three passes and rushed for 22 yards capped off the drive when he bulled his way in from one yard out.
After the missed extra point, Lima Senior led 6-0.
The score remained that way into the final minute of the first half when the Knights took advantage of an interception that began the St. Francis drive at the Spartan 19 yard line. Two plays later Traven Horton scored from two yards out for the score. With the successful extra point, the Knights took the one-point lead with 45 seconds left in the second quarter.
