DELPHOS – Lima Central Catholic continues to move on past the Shaun Thomas and Rossy Moore era.
On Saturday, LCC’s balanced offense rolled to a 44-13 victory Saturday night against Delphos St. John’s at Stadium Park on the Champions Field turf.
LCC is 1-1. St. John’s 0-2.
LCC quarterback Evan Unruh did damage with his legs and his arm. In the air, he completed 11 of 15 for 176 yards. He threw three TD passes of 32, 5 and 8 yards.
On the ground, Unruh had 12 carries for 55 yards.
Quintel Peoples had eight carries for 51 yards. Keiron Bailey had nine carries for 33 yards.
LCC ended the night with 193 yards rushing.
Traves Hoyle was Unruh’s top receiver, as he had three catches for 98 yards. He had TD catches of 32 and 52 yards.
The T-Birds picked off three Jays passes, as Bailey, Jamarion Robinson and Peoples all had interceptions to halt Jays drives.
The T-Birds had too much speed and quickness on both sides of the ball, as they mixed it up between the run and the quick passing game.
LCC led 8-0 after the first quarter and held a 22-6 lead at the half.
LCC scored the first time it had the ball, going 54 yards on 12 plays for the score.
On fourth-and-6 from the St. John’s 8, Unruh hit a leaping Carson Parker just inside the back line of the right corner of the end zone for a TD.
That gave LCC a 6-0 lead with 6:28 left in the first quarter.
LCC made it 8-0 when St. John’s was called for a safety when quarterback Nolan Schwinnen threw a backward pass (lateral), which bounced out of the end zone for a 7-yard loss and a safety.
The T-Birds then went 36 yards in four plays to push its lead to 16-0. Unruh hit Traves Hoyle with a 32-yard TD pass with 11:46 left in the first half.
St. John’s cut the lead to 16-6 when Schwinnen turned the right corner and went 23 yards on a quarterback keeper. That came with 7:01 left in the second quarter.
LCC expanded its lead to 22-6 on a 14-yard TD run by Peoples off the jet sweep. That capped an eight-play, 55-yard drive.
LCC made it 30-6 on a 48-yard TD off a post pass from Unruh to Hoyle. That came with 10:29 left in the third.
The T-Birds’ lead grew to 37-6 on a 41-yard swing pass to the right from Unruh to Peoples, who hit a jet stream and weaved his way through defensive traffic for 40 yards.
St. John’s was held to 69 yards rushing. The Blue Jays quarterback Nolan Schwinnen led the way with 45 yard with 17 carries.
In the air, Schwinnen completed 9 of 20 for 131 yards. He was intercepted three times.
