Roundup: Bluffton University hands out top athlete honors

BLUFFTON — Bluffton University is recognizing standout senior athletes in men’s and women’s soccer as the 2021 athletes of the year.

Patrick Spillman received the 2021 A.C. Burcky Award as outstanding senior male athlete of the year.

A four-year starter on the men’s soccer team, Spillman played in 60 games, tallied seven goals and finished with five assists during his college career. He is an Academic All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference honoree and earned a Second Team Academic All-Ohio Award in 2019.

The Burcky Award is named for the late professor of physical education and coach who served Bluffton from 1922-68.

Abigail Newkirk received the 2021 Kathryn E. Little Award as outstanding senior female athlete of the year.

Newkirk, a four-year letter winner for women’s soccer, played in 54 games and was named an Academic All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference honoree.

Newkirk’s award is named for Kathryn Little, who served in Bluffton’s health, physical education and recreation department and in athletics from 1958-74.

OAC recognizes

ONU’s Honigford

ADA — Ohio Northern freshman Grace Honigford has been named the Ohio Athletic Conference Women’s Player of the Week for the second straight time.

Honigford won medalist honors for the third consecutive tournament and the fifth time in 10 tournaments this season, posting a 9-over par 78-75—153 in the Otterbein Cardinal Super Classic at Northstar Golf Course. Her score is the third-lowest 36-hole total in ONU history.

She also led a record-setting Ohio Northern effort as the Polar Bears also won the team title.

The first round 318 on Saturday broke the previous record of 321 and the 36-hole 639 broke the previous mark of 648.

The Polar Bears will return to action with the OAC Championships on April 30-May 2.

ST. HENRY — Carlee Rethman had two hits, including a home run, Calli Post had a triple and two RBI and Sydney Schwieterman had a pair of hits for St. Henry.

Coldwater 19,

New Bremen 5

NEW BREMEN — The Cavaliers plated 10 runs in the fourth inning. Molly Steinke and Macy Sheffer each ahd three hits for Coldwater. Steinke also homered.


Game suspended

COLDWATER — The game between New Bremen and Coldwater was suspended after four innings due to inclement weather with Coldwater leading 2-0. The game is scheduled to resume at 5 p.m. May 11th at Coldwater.


North-South rosters

Rosters have been announced for the 2021 Ohio High School Football Coaches Association North/South All-Star game.

Area players on the Division I to III South team include Elida’s Dylan Harmon, St. Marys’ Bryan Ward and Wapakoneta’s Keith Houser. Elida’s Kyle Harmon was selected to be an assistant coach.

Area players on the DIV-DVII squad include Van Wert’s Owen Treece and Dru Johnson, Lima Central Catholic’s Shaun Thomas and Kenton’s Jayden Cornell and Jake Eversole. Van Wert’s Keith Recker was named the head coach. Columbus Grove’s Gunner King was named to the North team.

This year’s game will not be played due to the COVID-19 pandemic.


Nearly all area events were either canceled or postponed Tuesday due to inclement weather.

Rescheduled baseball games include Kenton at Defiance (May 3), Delphos St. John’s at Parkway (April 26), Pandora-Gilboa at Fort Jennings (May 7), Kalida at Leipsic (May 12), Columbus Grove at Miller City (April 23) and Continental at Ottoville (April 22).

Rescheduled softball games include Van Wert at St. Marys (May 10), Defiance at Kenton (May 6), Continental at Ottoville (April 22) and Kalida at Leipsic (May 12)

Rescheduled boys tennis matches include Van Wert at St. Marys (May 3) and Defiance at Kenton (April 22)

the Lincolnview at Parkway track and field dual meet has been moved to May 3.
